Texas was home to thousands of American Indians.  The lives of the early Indians were all very different.  Each tribe had its own way of life, and whether they became farmers, hunters, or fishermen depended on their environment.  They also varied greatly in how they looked, what they wore, what they ate, and how they lived.  Introduce us to you tribe and tell us five to seven of the most interesting facts you have learned.

  2. I love researching Native Americans. I think it's really cool to see how America was before us. I am studding Tonkawas. They were a very nice tribe. The name Tonkawa means "They keep together." They wore very creative clothing. The woman wore short skirts made of buckskin or rabbit skins that had been twisted into strands and woven together. The Tonkawa woman parted their hair in the middle, and let it hang free. Black stripes were painted on their faces and body's.

Apache Indians never eat snakes, prairie dogs, fish and turkeys becuae the see them as unclean. They used buffalo brains to make the clothing softer. The women take care of and build the teepees. The men did all the hunting and cutting the food.

  10. Jack and I are studying the Karankawa Indian tribe. In the place where the Karankawas lived there were many mosquitoes. To repel the mosquitoes they put alligator fat on their skin. If food was scarce for the Karankawa Indians, they would eat locusts, lice, tallow and bear fat. Since the Karankawas did not have fishing hooks they used spears and traps to catch fish. They built dugout canoes and on one side they trimmed it flat.

  15. Native Americans are really fun to study. I'm studying the tribe the Tonkawas with Julia. I was surprised that the Tonkawas ate spiders, mosquitos, and acorns. That is weird. Now we don't eat that stuff. The men wore breechcloth which reached below their knees and were decorated with animal teeth and dried seeds. Women wore buckskin or rabbit skin skirts. Tonkawas also ate roots, herbs, seeds and sunflowers. They hunted deer, skunks, rats, rabbits and tortoises. They really liked rattlesnake meat but I wonder how they caught them. They lived in teepees made out of buffalo skins.

  16. My tribe is the Caddoes and hear are here are five facts I learned. with the abundance and variety of trees in the Piney Woods, the Caddoes were able to make strong bows and arrows for use in battle. the largest Coddo Confederacy was the Hasinai tribe. each Coddo tribe had two chiefs, the Caddi. The Caddo people believed that all people came from a female god and her two daughters. When the Spanish explorers came, they met a tribe of the Caddo Indians called Tejas. they thought that was the name of their land. Over the years, "land of Tejas" was shortened and given the english spelling. Eventually, Tejas became Texas the name of your state today. That is five facts I have learned.

  18. I learned that buffalo was the main source of food for the Kiowa Indians.Other animals, such as antelope, deer and rabbits were another source of food. They sometimes drank the warm blood of a freshly killed animal becuase they believed it was healthy for them. The Kiowa did not raise crops but were able to trade with other Indians for these products.Unless they were starving the tribes did not eat fish, dogs, or coyotes.During cold weather leggings made of tanned buffalo or deerskin coverd the body from the foot to the hip and were decorated with beads, shells, and animal teeth.Kiowa women wore high moccasins to protect their legs from the wind and cold of the Texas plains. They also wore dresses made of deerskin. I like studying about Native Americans!

  19. My class is studying Native Americans. Ben and I are studying the Caddo tribe. Our tribe hunts occasionally. Their most important crop was corn, and they planted two different crops each year. The first crop was called little corn. They usually did their hunting in the winter after the crops had all been harvested. Also, during the winter season the bears had all become fatter and the buffalo herds were bigger. Buffalo were hunted for meat, and bears were hunted for their fat.I am really liking this unit!!!
