  11. I learned that for the Chinese new year they eat fish, dumplings, and long noodles for a long life. In china, before the new year, they clean the house and get rid of old things and buy new things. On the Chinese new year day, they do not say words like die, gone, away because that is bad luck. They don't wash their hair, do the laundry, or clean their house either. My favorite part was getting the red envelope with the money in it.

  14. Our the first CAFE meeting has been about Chinese New Year today. I learned that the color red is considered lucky on this holiday. According to legend the tradition started when a dragon attacked a village. A wise old man told the people to put up red lanterns and paper decorations and set off fire crackers. This scared the dragon away. I also learned that during Chinese New Year people don't wash their hair because it washes away the good luck. They also don't sweep their floors because that sweeps away the good luck. My favorite part was where we got to taste the Chinese pastries.

  17. I did not know that they cleaned out their houses so that all of the bad luck would go away and the good luck would come in. I bet my mom would like for me to do that too. People celebrate that night with fireworks, that would be my favorite part of the festivities. This year is the year of the monkey. I was born of the year of the pig. The pig's good characteristics are to put others before themselves and their bad characteristics are that they can be reckless. The children get red envelopes with money in them.
