Today, we discussed the difference between plot and theme. We focused on the different themes, messages or big ideas from our book Cheyenne Again.  Please write about some of the themes you discovered in your reading with your partners or what we read-aloud and give examples.  For example,  one theme was  treating the Indians unfairly in school when they taught them lies or left out important facts about their culture and some of the battles they had won.  Please write four to five sentences with the correct punctuation.

  6. I think most of the book was sad because people were being me to him and he was being bullied. I think the only part he was happy when the super nice teacher gave him something to put on his foot. A lot of people were trying to be mean to him. The really sad part was when he ran away that was very sad.

  10. The most sad part that I think was when they tide a metal ball to foot for punishment. If was giveing punishment to a kid I would make them wash the dishes.and the nicest part was when the nice teacher let cheyeen take the metal ball off his foot for a second. And a nather mien thing was when a difrent teacher said you don’t wunt to be dumb inden do you. And that’s it. By: Collins

  11. I felt bad for the boy because at the end they tied a ball and chain to his foot. This seems like a harsh punishment for the boy who is only a native american that really was sad. And, his teacher was really nice by taking off the ball and chain and giving him a wet cloth for his foot.

  13. One theme I discovered during my reading is rudeness because Young Bull was treated unfairly when his teacher said "Do you want to be a dumb Indian your whole life?". I like how Young Bull had a favorite teacher that was nice. Another theme is being fearful, like when he tried to run away. And like when he left home to go to school.

  14. I was surprised when the dad said "Young Bull most go." I was puzzled when they put the chance and ball on his ankle because that is not right in any way for any one. it made me feel hopeless for Young Bull and over whelmed with sadness when Young Bull started drawing pictures of his tribe. When he started to rub the cream on his sore ankle I could feel the relief in his expression when the teacher gave it to him.

  16. Young Bull was treated unfairly, because he was forced to leave his family. He was forced to build houses all by himself. He was forced to learn a new language, which was English. He tried to run away, but the guards caught hims and placed a metal ball and chain on his ankle. Hi ankle became bruised and damaged. Luckily, a kind teacher cared for him and helped him remember that he would always be an Indian on the inside.

  17. I thought the adults at this boarding school were very mean to Young Bull because they tied a metal ball on his ankle so he would not run away. They did not respect his culture because they said, "Do you want to be a dumb Indian all your life?" One other theme is compassion because there was one teacher that helped Young Bull when she put cream on his ankle.
