Wondering about Westward Expansion

We have been building background knowledge for our Westward Expansion Unit. We've learned about the Lewis and Clark Expedition. In library, we learned some information about supplies needed to take on the six month journey west. What are at least three wonders you would like to investigate further? Please read each other's comments and try not to repeat posts. Be sure to write in complete sentences with the correct capitalization and punctuation.

  1. I wonder how often you would come across Indians on one Oregon trail? I also wonder about how many people are in one wagon train?

  2. I wonder how hard it was to walk about 20 miles everyday?! And how to know what water is bad or good? And I learned if I lived back then I would not like to be at the back of the carriage train!

  3. How many people stayed behind instead of coming on the Oregon trail with all the other pioneers? How many indians did they come across that weren't so nice? Did they ever have time to grow more food?

  4. I learned that most Pioneers died because of when they drank dirty water and some of the fish had diseases! So they had to know what water was okay and what water was bad! I also learned that for breakfast they had bacon, pancakes, and coffee! Yummy! :D

  8. My first wonder is that whether all the pioneers that wanted to go to Oregon had to go on the same path. Also I wonder, why didn't the people that saw the dumped out merchandise pick it up and sell it to the closest town? My third and last wonder is how the pioneers know that the water was good or bad.

  9. My first wonder is 1) how did the first person in the wagon train know which way to go? 2) how did the people walking stay at the same pace as the people in the wagons? 3) where there any other kinds of ways for people to get to the west besides walking and taking a wagon?

  11. My wonders are 1: Did they meet any other people besides the Native Americans? 2: Why were all of the pioneers up in the 13 colonies anyways? 3: While they were at the camp outs and sleeping at night, how did they hold the wagon down if the bull was sleeping? Or do bulls sleep while standing up? When they travel on the Oregon trail all of the wagons line up in a long straight line that is called a train. The person driving the wagon in the back of the train always gets dust in their face the entire ride. So they need to take turns being in the back. On the journey, you can only pack a little bit of supplies because the bull and horses will not be able to pull the wagon if the weight is too heavy. The very sick or infant babies can only ride in the wagon. The other children have to walk the entire journey. They have to bring flour, sugar, salt and other dry and wet mixes for baking food for their family. Most important the families in the wagon have to help each other because if the do not they will not be able to survive the risky journey.
