Reading Strategies

As good readers we all use reading strategies to improve our reading skills and our reading comprehension. The most important part of reading is to understand what you are reading, and that is why we use reading strategies. It makes reading more enjoyable and a lot more fun when you connect to what you are reading and give a shout out to others about the great book you are reading. Please tell us about your favorite reading strategy or strategies that you use when you are reading and why you like them. Be sure to write four to five complete sentences with the correct punctuation and capitalization.

  1. I like to use background knowledge to make connections and to help me understand what I am reading. I also like to visualize when I read so if there is no pictures I can still act like there is. I Think that reading strategies help a lot and let you understand what you are reading better. What reading strategies do you like?

  7. When I read, I like to use connecting. It helps me understand what I am reading when I imagine the events in a book happening in my life. I read Ivy and Bean, I connected with one of the characters because they are neighbors that are good friends and it made me think of my neighbors that are my good friends.

  9. My favorite reading strategy is when I infer what the character is feeling like, like in my book, (Dragon Breath When Fairies Go Bad.) Danny Dragon Breath was growing the world's largest pumpkin. I thought that Danny was spending a lot of time working on that and he hopes that he will get some type of award. And that is my favorite reading strategy.

I love to ask questions because if you ask questions you will learn more about the book. 12. A good reader always looks at the pictures if they can't find out what something means. They ask questions in their minds to figure out things too. This is called having an inner conversation. They synthesize- that means to add to something you are reading. I love inferring because it tells what the author is wanting you to know without having to write it in the story.

  13. Sometimes I read to fast and I don't get everything. So I slowdown and reread from where I left off. And I love to visualize and summarizing to friends. And I always do this at the end of books. I love putting it together so I realize wow now I see why he or she did this or that.

  15. I read fast sometimes so I reread and slow down and think about what I read. And sometimes if there is a really hard word I take it apart and do all the sounds and put it back to gather and it makes the word. And sometimes I if it has no picture I look at the words and make the picture in my head. and if I lose my page in my book I reread like twenty pages to find my page and to remember whats happening in the book and When I stop to do something and think about something else so I forget what is happening in the book and so I have to reread. And how I pick my books is not just looking at the cover. I do the five finger rule.

  18. Wow! Mrs. OConnell, you have a great group of readers & thinkers. Based on their reflections, I can tell they value their reading time in class and at home. I also have the feeling, they are beginning to get more from their reading. When I read, I find I use all of them; I've used them for years so I have had lots of practice! However, inferring and synthesizing are the two I probably use most. Putting the new pieces together and reading between the lines (what was not directly stated) help me understand new teaching ideas in books and stories that I read for pleasure. Keep up the great work, 3-O!
