Cheyenne Again

Today, we discussed the difference between plot and theme. We focused on the different themes or big ideas from our book Cheyenne Again.  Please write about some of the themes you discovered in your reading with your partners or what we read-aloud and give examples.  For example,  one theme was about treating the Indians unfairly in school when they taught them lies or left out important facts about their culture and some of the battles they had won.  Please write four to five sentences with the correct punctuation.

This is an Indian Boarding School in the 1880's.

  1. I think he was brave and had courage when he ran away when he lived with cruel people. I also think he was sad and angry when they asked him if he wanted to be a dumb Indian all his life. I also think he felt happy when the teacher gave him something to help and words of courage when he was in pain. He felt depressed and tortured when he wore things he wasn't used to and he felt really homesick.

  2. I think the theme in this book is mostly sadness. Because he left his parents to go to a school that he never even wanted to go to.And because he could not practice any Cheyenne traditions. And when he was trying to run away he got caught.

  3. I think this book is sad. Because they were treating him like he was a slave because he was native Amarican. And because he was ten and they made him go. And he did not want to go. And I think he was really lonely because his brothers were not there with him.

  4. I think this book makes me angry because they were treating him very very badly. I also think it is very sad because they made him wear a ball and chain on his ankle all day. I think he missed his mom and dad a lot. I am glad we do not have to face those challenges!

  5. This book makes me sad and happy at the same time. When they said that he had to go to the bording school the mom did not want to let him go but the dad wanted him to go because all the food was running out. They will feed him at the school. It made me sad that he had to go even though his parents did not want him to and he did not want to either. It made me happy because at the end of the book the math teacher said never forget that you are in Indian and don't let us take that away.

  7. I think one of the themes is sadness, because he is taken away from his family. Another theme is pain because he has to wear rough boots that made his feet sore. One more theme is hopeless because he was caught in a blizzard while running away. Another theme is desperate because he feels desperate to get out of the boarding school. It's so unfair that he has to leave his family to go to school.

  8. I think this book is sad because they do not treat the Indian boy fair. He was taken away from his family and forced to live as an white man. One of the worst parts was when they tied a chain to his leg when he ran away, I thought that was horrible and they made him feel hopeless. Thinking of his tribe kept him going.

  9. In the book Cheyenne again it said "We where shoos that hurt are feet' I felt so disappointed that they didn't care about how the kids thought they felt at all. All they cared about was how they looked. In the book there's one teacher he liked. She told him "never forget where you came from and don't let us take your memory's away. I thought that he felt relived that there was one teacher that didn't want to change who he was. When we read the book all together we thought that it was unfair that they don't get freedom. Before they took him away from his tribe he was able to be free and run around and enjoy nature.I'm thankful we still don't do that because that is rude with a capital R!

  10. I think one of the themes was sadness too because he was forced to go to the school. They treated Cheyenne very badly. He was treated so badly he ran away but they caught him and put a chain with a ball on his leg! That made me angry. But something that made me happy was when his math teacher said ''never forget that you are a indian and don't let us take it a away. I wonder why she said that and I wonder why the book didn't mention that Cheyenne won the battle.

  11. I think these people were RUDE WITH A CAPITAL R!!!!! Because forcing a 8 or 9 year old boy leaving his family is not fair! People should not be able to control somebody ales is life people should do whats best for them. I didn't like the part when they tied a ball and chain around his leg!:( I do like the teacher that was nice to him and gave him the cream she was very nice!!!!:) I hope that some day he will go back home and be a indian once more!!! Cheyenne Again.

  12. The book made me sad they treated little native American children badly and they forced them to learn the wight mans ways. They took everything the children knew about life on the plains and threw it away as if it was garbage. The idea of someone taking me away from my family and taking away everything I knew makes me really angry. And saying that they lost a war that they spoke so proudly of that they really won is like saying that we lost world war ii!

  15. Sadness is a theme in the book. The police separate Cheyenne from his family. He had to go to a school where the teachers were strict. They put a chain around his foot when he was trying to escape. They took everything away from him and changed him. The teachers made him learn a different language and made him cut his hair and took his shoes which his mother made him.

  16. I think Bull is mad and sad, because the teachers took away the cloths his mother had made for him. They cut of his braids, and said:"You have lost nothing valuable.". They just want him to forget that he is Indian and make him live the white man life. I think the teacher that tells him do not forget that he is Indian is nice and might be Indian herself.

  17. I think the theme of the book is unfairness and sadness. The police took him away from his family and his way of doing things like hunting, drinking, playing, and his hair style. He also had to go to a boarding school with teachers that were strict , outside of the one teacher that was nice to him. The kids had to do things way out of there comfort zone. The boys had to speak English when they were already taught a different way of speaking.
