Are you Adventurous?

The year is 1845. The President is John Polk and you are a citizen in the Eastern region of the United States. You have never been a landowner before. You hear people talking about Manifest Destiny and moving west. Many Americans believe it was their "manifest destiny" to spread over what we now call the United States from sea to shining sea. Those willing to travel West could claim land and develop it. Will you be a pioneer and travel the Oregon Trail for 6 months/ 2,000 miles to claim your land and open space? Or, will you choose to stay put in the crowed east. What are your reasons for leaving on the trail or staying in your current home? Write at least 5 to 6 good sentences.

  1. I would go to Oregon. Because there is new land with good stuff. There is a lot of land there. Plus the land is free. And I can start a new life there. But it would be hard leaving my family.

  9. My reason for moving to Oregon are are big. There is free, fertile, land and plenty of animals to hunt. Also everything there is almost new and people tell stories about Oregon and make it sound like a magical place. But I would be sad about leaving my family an friends in the east along with my house and belongings. And, the thought of the dangers on the trail keeps on penetrating my mind. Overall, though, I can't wait to start a new life in Oregon!

  12. I don't believe in all of this Manifest Destiny talk. I don't want to move from Illinois. I have heard terrible stories of starving to death while on the trail. THE TRIP TAKES 6 MONTHS! I can't be away from home that long. But, alas, my husband is king of the clan and we are going.

  16. In Oregon there is free land, you can just claim it. You can build a home there easily. It won't be as crowded as staying in the east would be and there wouldn't be any free land. In Oregon it is a better life with open spaces. In Oregon there would be more animals to hunt because no one has killed any because no one has been there to kill them. I would hunt them for my job. So, it's decided, I'm going west.
